Al Habeeb has introduced‘Petroleum Engineering course
for the first time in Hyderabad and SVU regions for the benefit of the
local students who want to pursue a career in Indian and International
Oil Companies and field training.
What is Petroleum Engineering?
Petroleum Engineering is an engineering discipline concerned
with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which
can be crude oil or natural gas. The two key areas of learning will be
oil exploration and processing of crude oils.
Petroleum Industry in India
India is the fifth largest consumer of primary energy and
the third largest consumer of oil in the Asia–Pacific region after China
and Japan. Due to high economic growth, there is a huge need for
enhancing supply of energy resources. Also, dependence on imported
petroleum continues to grow and is ultimately impacting our country’s
long term growth. Of the 26 sedimentary basins identified in India, so
far, only 20% of the total area has been well explored. The remaining
areas need to be extensively explored with the best of technologies,
with special emphasis on the frontier basins. With the introduction of
the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP), introduction of the
much-needed capital and state-of-the-art technology to exploration
sector could be made possible. With the policies and regulations being
the most transparent in the world, the NELP has revived a healthy spirit
of competition between National Oil Companies and private and
multinational companies. NELP was conceptualized by the Government of
India, during 1997-98 to provide an equal platform to both Public and
Private sector companies in exploration and production of hydrocarbons
with Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) as a nodal agency for its
implementation. It was introduced to boost the production of oil and
natural gas and providing level playing field for both public and
private players. Till now, 9 rounds of NELP have been completed, 320
Sedimentary Blocks were awarded and more than 400 profit sharing
contracts have been signed, out of which 168 are in operation.
Career Prospects
Petroleum engineering has historically been one of the
highest paid engineering disciplines. Petroleum engineering course
offers wonderful job opportunities at global and domestic levels.
Opportunities in oil and gas sector are ample in Gulf countries, Mexico,
Canada, Indonesia and Thailand with very high annual income packages.
Higher education opportunities are good all over America and Europe too.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor
Statistics, the median income for petroleum engineers is $98,380. In
terms of starting salaries, the average starting salary for petroleum
engineers who have earned a Bachelor’s degree is $60,718. According to a
recent salary survey by the National Association of Colleges and
Employers, bachelor’s degree candidates in petroleum engineering
received starting salary offers averaging $62,236 a year. They are among
the highest paid engineers. Forbes.com (2007) reported that petroleum
engineering is the 24th best paid job in USA. According to the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics, petroleum engineers hold about 17,000 jobs
in the United States. This represents 1.1% of the 1.5 million jobs held
by engineers in the U.S.
Petroleum engineers work mostly in oil and gas extraction,
professional, scientific and technical services, and petroleum refining.
Employers include major oil companies and hundreds of smaller,
independent oil exploration, production, research institutes, and
service companies. Most petroleum engineers work where oil and gas are
found. Large numbers are employed in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alaska,
and California, including offshore sites. Many American petroleum
engineers also work overseas in oil-producing countries.
Core Companies
Employment opportunities are vast and exist in the private,
public sector and foreign oil companies; technical service providers,
tertiary sectors like insurance, IT, Banking, Business Advisory and
Consulting; Associated Industries like Petrochemical, Paints and Dye and
in Overseas Countries like in ME, SE Asia, China, Russia and CIS
countries. Organizations in which the graduates get absorbed are
Reliance Industries Ltd., ONGC, Schlumberger, Shell, Gas Authority of
India Ltd., British Gas, OIL., Halliburton Services, Essar Oil, GSPC,
Cairn Energy, IOCL, Baker Hughes, Reliance Energy, NIKO Resources,

Mechanical Engineering
There is hardly any aspect of life that is not influenced by a
Mechanical Engineer. Mechanical Engineering involves the production
transmission and use of mechanical power.
Mechanical Engineers research, develop, design, manufacture and test
tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. They work on power
generating machines such as electricity generators, internal combustion
engines, steam and gas turbines, jet and rocket engines. They also
develop machines such as refrigerators and air-conditioners, robots,
material handling systems and industrial production equipment.
Mechanical Engineering work also include designing and developing jet
engines, steam engines, power plants, under water structures, hydraulic
system measurement devices, etc.
AHCET has established highly advanced
CAD/CAM labs to propagate emerging technologies and train manpower in
the field of computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing with
best possible efficiencies. Mechanical Engineering is the broadest and
most diverse engineering discipline. Not many people can perform their
jobs without Mechanical Engineers. |
|
Laboratories |
Virtually every company that produces a product employs
mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineers are also involved in the
computer industry in the design of hard disk drives, in the cooling of
electronic components of a computer.
In tune with the above requirement, AHCET
has established advanced and well equipped CAD/CAM labs and the latest
software like Auto Desk Educational Solution set, ANSYS 10.0 PRO-E, CNC
Lathe and CNC Milling Machin. |
|

Include applied mechanics computer-aided design and
manufacturing: energy systems, pressure vessels and piping, heating,
refrigeration. |
|
Solar Car |
A car designed and developed by our team of mechanical engineers
which traps and conserves solar light and runs without petrol. The
solar car also does not cause any environmental pollution. | | |
Civil Engineering
The course aims at studying all the basic engineering sciences
and is designed to introduce the students to a variety of problems
encountered by civil engineers such as: Structures, Foundation,
Construction, Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering, Works Management
and Cost, Transportation Engineering, Irrigation Engineering etc.
Civil Engineering involves the design and construction of roads,
bridges, railways etc. and the erection of large buildings. Civil
engineers are responsible for planning and designing a project and
having it constructed to the required scale. New areas include the field
of structural engineering and emerging technologies like Finite element
analysis, Artificial intelligence and Neural networks. A civil engineer
is concerned with the creation of constructed facilities. The
activities involve planning, analysis, design, construction &
maintenance of a Variety of facilities such as building, highways &
rail-roads, water-ways & canals, dams & power houses, water
treatment & sewage disposal system, docks & harbors, bridges,
& tunnels.
With increase in demand in construction due to economic progress made by
India, there is a huge demand for civil engineers in all specialized
fields (Water Resources, Structural Engg., Transportation, Geotechnical
etc.). In private sector where professionals aim for high salaries,
similar to ERP or other software’s, work is outsourced to India by
developed nations, even civil design work is being outsourced. Many
companies in Hi-Tech City are carrying out the consultation with foreign
construction companies.
New software’s are entering the market which ease the calculation of
designs of buildings, roads, water structures etc like SAP, PDS, ETABS,
SAFE, X-STEEL etc. As these are new software’s in the market, companies
are not demanding experience, so just learning will surely be helpful in
boarding the job. |
